Reasons to adopt a greyhound – Jade Dewey

Say goodbye to your sofa, not having to share your food and a dog free camera roll as when adopting a greyhound your life changes completely… for the better! We may be biased, but greyhounds make the best pets ever! Don’t be put off by their size, because these big friendly giants are the most loving and loyal breed you’ll ever get to meet! Okay okay, we maybe biased, but if that wasn’t enough to sway you to adopt a grey, then these following points certainly will!

There is a greyhound for everyone

No seriously there really is! Whether you’re looking for a small girl or a big oaf of a dog, there is a greyhound out there to suit your lifestyle. Greyhounds are routine dogs and happily adapt to a person’s routine, if you like to go for morning walks, a greyhound who enjoys being out and about would be suitable. If you’re in your retired years and want a friendly companion a petite laid back greyhound may be the one!

With over 20 years of experience in greyhounds, we’re knowledgeable to pair you up with a suited greyhound… no it’s not Love Island but we take your lifestyle, home life and family environment into account and show you a collection of preferred dogs for you.

They’re 45 mph Couch Potatoes

Seriously, this breed is one of the laziest on the planet. Charity recommendations are two 20-minute walks a day (obviously more can be done) and that’s literally all they will want. Some greyhounds enjoy playing with toys and doing the famous ‘Zoomies’ in the garden, but that’s enough to wear them out. They’ll need a 2-hour nap to recharge.

There is a misconception in the fact they’re athletes and need lots of walking, they really don’t! Before they retire, a greyhound would typically run once a week and depending on their favourite distance, 500m could be run in 30+ seconds and that’s their burst of exercise done for the week. They may be the second fastest animal in the world but they’re a sprinter and enjoy their down time like the rest of us.

Greyhounds Make Great Family Pets

Unlike some other rehoming centres in the UK, we take every case individually and are willing to allow families with younger children to adopt a greyhound.

We have rehomed to families with toddlers before and the greyhound and child have grown up to be best friends. Although having said this, it is the parents’ responsibility to ensure the children know their limits with the dog such as when the dog is asleep don’t touch them or don’t go near them when they’re eating. We will go through this within the homing process but a lot of greyhounds love children and fit in so well within a family environment, so don’t rule out adopting if you’re a young family!

You’re Adopting a Professional Athlete

No, you’re not adopting Mo Farah or even Usain Bolt (although just for the record, greyhounds are faster than Usain) but a greyhound is a professional athlete. Did you know a greyhound spends 75% of their time in the air with all four paws off the ground when running? These lean, sleek and muscly hounds are a beautiful breed and are actually one of the most ancient breeds, dating back to ancient Egypt, when they were considered as a god. We definitely agree and I know our retired hounds on the sofa would too!

You can trace back the history of your greyhound for years and years, finding their Mum, Dad, Nan and Grandad and even their great great great great great Nan… you get the picture. What is really nice is the fact we often get brothers and sisters alongside cousins come into our care, it’s great to see chat members meet up on our Facebook group to talk about siblings etc!

You Get to Join The Greyhound Community

Some would say the mad world… once you adopt a greyhound, they become addictive, just like chocolate! We are one big community and are always here to help one another out. Our Facebook chat page is always buzzing and full of the latest dog bed in Aldi or even how much someone’s greyhound farts (one downside to a greyhound is their stinky bum!). It is a real community and one that is there for life. You may even find yourself making friends for life through adopting a greyhound.

We could list many more reasons to adopt a greyhound but we wouldn’t want to take all of your time. Thank you for taking the time to read this blog post, feel free to share it on social media to spread the word on what greyt pets greyhounds make!
